Caliber: Redbone Coonhound
Cali

He is a very loving, affectionate boy and likes to please people.
He has grown up around kids so is very good with children and other people. He is also very playful and friendly with other dogs.

He is house trained and could definitely do with some more obedience training since he is a working dog and LOVES to learn new things.
He is a quick learner; initially there were a couple of bad habits such as counter surfing and chasing cars that we are working on……….he is getting better and his recall is great.

He is pretty good about staying close when we are out on the trails, and a treat or two along the way always makes him come when he is called.
Coon hounds are high energy so Cali would do very well in an active household with people or a family who love the outdoors.
He will need a home with a fenced yard and a family who can give him lots of exercise.

Doberman: Mary

IMG_0195 This is a beautiful 3 year old Doberman who must go to a home with someone who is used to dealing with difficult dogs that needs more training. She is not good with cats, dogs, children but she would be okay with one dog. She needs a quiet calm home that will take her on hikes, walks, etc. She needs to be with you but can be left alone in her crate for four hours and will sleep all night in her crate. She is a very loving dog with her family.

Weimaraner: Sam

Samweim

Sam is a quiet, reserved Weimaraner, loving but a bit anxious. Who wouldn’t be if they didn’t know where they could call home? He must be confused with various people and dogs in his life and none of them his own: somebody feeds him, somebody else walks him, yet somebody else hikes with him. Where should he put his heart without the danger of having it broken again? Yet when he is given the chance to relax, he is a friendly, outgoing dog, who enjoys the outdoors immensely.

Sam loves hikes, he loves riding in the car but will bark loudly when people/dogs pass by, yet he is exceptionally good with all dogs and humans he meets on the trails and at the beach. However, with love and perseverance, the barking in the car can be trained out of him. His recall could also use improvement, but this again is easily achievable with gentle consistent training. As it is now, various people at various times apply their particular training style to him. It will work in the end but will take so much longer.

He is very smart and, as with all Weimaraners, has a mind of his own but Sam often seeks human guidance and comfort: it’s the way he looks you in the eyes when you’re talking to him, when he settles in the back of the car, when he checks over his shoulder while he is ahead on the trail. He just needs a human to trust and call his forever, especially an active human who can be active with him.

Like all Weims, he likes his food and can be a bit growly when he thinks another dog might take it but he has given warning growls only. He gets excited when he sees squirrels although he was merely curious when he saw a kitten in a cage at the vets; however, when a large office cat walked by, he barked loudly at it, so a home without cats might be better suited to him or a savvy owner who knows how to introduce him cautiously.

This is just a sweet dog who needs someone to give his love to and someone to give him love in return. Will you be that person for him?

 Bailey

Beautiful BaiBailey.-6ley loves playing fetch with a tennis ball, and she will entertain herself for hours if you happen to tire out before she does. You’d never guess that Bailey is 5 years old, given her energetic personality. She definitely needs a home where she gets daily exercise as well as mental stimulation–tricks, training or travel. Once she’s had her play or exercise, Bailey is a great couch companion and loves to put her head in your lap and fall asleep. Bailey would be a great dog for a family with active older kids. Her one fault: she loves chasing kitty cats, so a feline free home is a MUST!

Australian Kelpie/Lab Mix: Licorice

licorice

Meet beautiful Licorice! This sweet boy is timid and shy and the shelter and desperately needs a loving home of his own. Licorice has a the kindest soul but is very, very shy and nervous in the shelter environment with so much barking and action. He needs patient, loving guardians who will assure him that he is loved and help him come out of his shell. He will also need owners willingto provide additional training so that Licorice can grow into his best doggie self. Licorice has lived with children and other dogs in the past and we think he would do well with friendly companions of either specie. Licorice is a truly special boy, just waiting for the love he deserves so that he can return it a million fold!

Hound: Huckleberry

Huckleberry 1466121580321is as sweet as the fruit he is named after! He is a 1 year old, 52 lb hound. Huck is a bit timid, especially when first meeting people, but once he warms up, he’ll be jumping in your lap in no time! He’s already great on a leash and knows basic commands. Given his breed, we think he’ll learn rules and commands very quickly. Huckleberry may be a bit shy but he is also a young, energetic boy and needs a home where he gets daily exercise as well as encouragement and affection. He does well with other friendly dogs, and a welcoming canine companion may help him gain confidence. Huckleberry is ready and waiting for his best friend and forever home

He is in need of attentive owners who have a very well fenced yard, and will not leave him alone for a long period of time, as he tends to bark quite a bit when left alone. Tork would benefit from continued training and with that he will grow into the best companion you could ask for. He loves being in the water!

German Wirehaired Pointer/Rough Collie X: Mira

myra2

This is Mira! She is a year old.

MyraShe is an excitable, happy dog. She is in need of secure outside space and lots of exercise. She loves playing fetch & when she is done, she just won’t bring back the ball for you to throw anymore. Loves belly rubs &  is very intelligent but still needs some training. She is very affectionate and likes to sleep with people at night. She is high spirited, and energetic, very intelligent, and food motivated. Due to these characteristics, when she is bored  she becomes destructive and mischievous. She is an excellent candidate for agility or trick training! She has slipped her lease and has gotten a taste for chasing game so extra precautions must be taken. She is not good with cats and we do not recommend a home with small children although she adores other dogs, and would do well with another doggie companion. Can you give this girl the exercise and attention she needs ?

Labrador/Alaskan Malamute X’s: Ricky & Two

Two_&_Ricky_kissing

Two and Ricky are five year old Lab/Malamute dogs that live on a remote island in Alaska. Two has lived on a chain his whole life and Ricky wanders the island looking for food.  A woman who went there for work three years ago has been feeding them and talked the owners into letting her take Two off of his chain to run every day.  The woman now has to leave the island and cannot take them with her. With the brutal winter coming, the dogs will once again go hungry and Ricky risks being shot by people on the island who do not want him wandering. They are both very loyal, loving dogs!!

Two_&_Ricky

Two is 125 lbs, excitable and food motivated, is leash trained but pulls. He has not had a great deal of socialization and will chase cats. He does not show any aggression to humans and loves attention. He is tied up outside and has lived this way most of his life. Once a day a caring person let’s him run.

Ricky is 80-90 lbs, very focused, attentive, plays fetch and loves running beside you. He is leashed trained and does not pull. Doesn’t care to socialize with other dogs other than his brother Two and can be dominate alpha. He cannot live with cats and does have a high prey drive. Ricky has been fed by a caring person for the last year. In return he is very protective of her and does not leave her side when outside and will wait next to her car until she returns, not matter how long she is gone or what the weather brings.

If you can help these boys please email immanuel222@att.net

Belgian Shepherd Malinois/Labrador Retriever X: Burton

burton_27264413-1-large

Burton is a 4yr old new dog to be rehomed by our rescue and is currently residing with his owners until a new home can be found.  He is looking for a new home because his current family is unable to provide him with the physical and mental stimulation that he needs to become the gentleman he is capable of.

Burton_27264413-2-large

From our assessment of his behaviors, Burton is a very sweet and energetic dog with a happy disposition. He is active on and off leash with basic skills under his collar (leash skills) but would benefit greatly from a committed and active exercise regime and basic training.  He loves to fetch a ball and will aim to please.  He is eager to learn and experience new things and would thrive in an environment where he is given a “job” to do. A home with no small children is recommended while a home with cats would be cautioned. Burton may likely benefit from the presence of a balanced dog however further assessment of direct interaction with other dogs may be required.

Burton’s current owners state that Burton loves to be around you in the home.  He follows at your feet and quickly settles in your company.  He likes to go for hikes and long walks but has not had these luxuries in a while.  He is an energetic and happy go lucky boy – with a lot of love to give.  He brings happiness into their daily lives with companionship and cuddles.

We are still getting to know Burton but would be delighted to place him in a home with an active couple – where he will be the main focus.  As noted, Burton may do well with a balanced and well trained doggy companion, but we are still assessing his demeanor with other dogs in his presence.

Malamute X: Keelah & Belgian Shepherd X: Chelsea

Parksville-20120311-00160

For Adoption May 2013

Keelah & Chelsea’s Dad needs your help! He has been ill and is looking for a loving home for his 2 beloved dogs. He, very sadly, cannot continue to care for them.

Keelah is a malamuteX and Chelsea is a Belgian Shepherd X.  They are both 6.5 years old.  They are both spayed. Both healthy. Both good-natured dogs. They lived in Kelowna with their family along with 2 cats and 2 rabbits.

Keelah and Chelsea have never been apart.  Their family is desperately wanting these two dogs to go together to a loving home.   These dogs have no “issues” that so many rescue dogs have  —  they have only known one home and have been very well cared for and loved.

Can you help? Please email sgmartin@telus.net for further information!

Lab X: Jake

On Hold for Adoption!

P1030625This is Jake! Jake is young boy – under a year we think – with so much potential! His original  foster family had and a pack of dogs to keep him company and play with. This poor boy was left abandoned, tied to a tree and would love to settle into a new life with his new BFF!

jake-P1030488

On his temperment testing he scored HIGH on his social skills, both humans and other doggies, highly tolerant with a low dominance level. He is a high energy guy who really wants to be with his human(s) and please. In the time he has resided with his foster family he has learned many new obedience skills and would love to learn more!

Since his evaluation we have learned that Jake needs space to run … this boy can RUN !  and preferrably a family with another dog to play with. He is excellent at the doggie park and loves to make new friends. If you are looking for a very energetic young dog, perhaps interested in agility or other tracking exercises Jake may just be the perfect dog for you! Jake loves his people and is the perfect social butterfly with all dogs big, small, young & old. Living with a large group of dogs taught him proper social doggie etiquette

We do not recommend him with a family with cats or small animals as Jake does have a prey drive. During the evaluation they were not able to test him with children, however, based on his nature with adults they feel he would be great and affectionate with some training to work on some general manners.

Lab/Ridgeback X: Cinnamon

On Hold for Adoption!

IMG_0628IMG_0618Cinnamon is looking for her furever home! She is a 2 year old, spayed female Ridgeback/Labrador X. She came into rescue for no fault of her own as owners were moving and could not take her. She arrived with some insecurities which she is working on with her trainer and foster family. She arrived very fearful, not understanding what was going on and is gaining her self confidence back. She still has work to do but is excelling … it helps that she is very motivated to please! We are looking for an experienced handler who will continue her training to bring her up to being a fully balanced girl. She is a happy pooch and loves to play with toys, fetch her ball, figure out treat toys and most importantly to be close to you! Cinnamon is a medium energy dog and is easy to exercise, no separation anxiety, can be left safely at home and will be respectful of your belongings. She does not go up on furniture or beds, sleeps on her own bed in her crate and is quiet. Being crate trained she is happy to snooze, and hangout in it. This girls needs a home with no other pets as she needs to be the focus at this time. She does take time to warm up to new people and older children and needs to approach them in her own time … this usually only takes a minute or 2 and then she is enticing them to play! If you are a confident pack leader, have experience working with rescue dogs mainly insecurities & feel you could give her the right home please reply to this posting. This girl has so much love to give … please help us give her that chance!

English Pointer – Taffy

On Hold for Adoption!

SONY DSCI’m an extremely busy and affectionate little female pup. I’m about a year old; a happy English Pointer, I have a lot of things to do and a lot of energy to spare. That doesn’t mean that I don’t like sitting on my rescue mom’s or dad’s laps for loving. But it does mean it’s really hard for her to get pictures of me! When I was much younger, I was probably sold by my breeder to a family without other dogs because it took me a while to learn to read their signals. Now I’m a favourite at daycare with my funny little face. I’m also very talented and can walk on my back legs. I’m so excited when people love me that I still jump on them for attention, but I’m getting better. I need a home with an older, calm dog to show me the ropes and people who know my breed and energy level, who have a lot of patience and know how to help me become a responsible pointer girl. Because of my enthusiasm and exuberance, a home with NO young children and cats would be ideal. Positive based training would be great for me because I like to please.

Plott Hound: Guinness

009_9 - Copy (2)

Guinness is a 6 or 7 year old neutered Plott hound. He is healthy and loves going out for walks and runs. He is very good natured and is good with other dogs and kids. Loves treats, head scratches  and returns affection with nibbles on you or his teddy . Looooves walks, freedom & dog parks.

P1000676He can get a little bit excited and may jump up, so no little ones in his new home please! Guinness knows basic commands, sit, lie down, wait, off you go! He Loves treats and head scratches. He Doesn’t like yelling or when you leave he will tremble but gets over it. With a proper introduction he would be fine living with a cat and would enjoy the companionship.

Plott Hounds need to go to the right person, who really understands the breed, and are prepared to deal with it.  They were bred to hunt large game, even bear, as well as smaller ones.  They have an extremely high hunting and tracking instinct, and will travel for miles to find their scented animal.   They are highly likely to take off when let off leash and catch a scent, even if trained well.  This does not mean that  these dogs should stay on leash at all times, as that would be a miserable life for them, given how much exercise these dogs need.  It means that they have to be trained well, and that the owner is prepared to take a risk whenever letting them off leash in the woods.

Weimaraner: Griffin

Griffin1Griffin2Griffin, a Weimaraner with a sweet & gentle soul was surrendered at about 9 years old due to his owner ‘s health decline. Griffin had spent most of his time in the backyard, or sleeping on the couch. Griffin is easy to handle, and rides well in cars. He approaches new situations cautiously, but is not fearful. He patiently waits for your attention. Doesn’t jump up, but does a little jig when he knows a walk is about to start or when you return to the pack. He weighs in at 75 lbs., and has some lipomas and skin tags, otherwise, he has a nice coat. He is responding well to his new exercise routine, doesn’t seem very interested in swimming or chasing balls, but will grab a stick if you entice him. His nose seems to work just fine. He checks back with you when hiking the trails. Griffin is hard of hearing likely due to chronic ear infections in both ears, so he can be startled out of sleep, but quickly relaxes. His ear infections have extensive treatment and may recur over time. He has a small cataract in his right eye, and some scarring of the whites of both eyes. It is likely he suffers from allergies, and that is being investigated. He barks only occasionally, to help the other dog announce, “the axe murderer is coming”. He knows “Sit” and “Down” and responds to directional hand/arm movements like “Come here”, “This way”, “in” & “out”. He wants to earn the “treat” and is happy to follow his people around. He reads other dogs well, and seems to get along with all and mostly ignores puppies after the initial sniff. He is well used to living with another dog around, but you can tell if he feels uncomfortable in a crowd, if he starts pacing and panting. Very happy to be stroked, or ears scratched, or just hang together.

Weimaraner – Molly

On Hold for Adoption!

MollyLovely Molly is in need of a furever home. She is between 2 and 3 years old.

Molly is afraid of cats but is fine so far with other dogs. She will need positive-based training to bond with her adopters.

She also needs a fenced yard but lots of off-leash exercise in a safe environment. Another calm, trained dog in the home would be an asset.

Molly is gentle, loving and loyal.

German Shorthaired Pointer: Annie

P1010291

IMG_03072

Annie is an 11 year old GSP, in good health and loves to eat and exercise.

She gets along with other dogs and children and walks on a walking harness. Annie would do best  in a home where someone works from home or is home most of the time as she does have some separation anxiety. She would do very well with a loving senior who she can shower affection & love on! She is a senior so does not require as much exericse as a young dog, although she is still very active !

German Wirehaired Pointer: HEIDI

On Hold for Adoption!

DSCF2665

I’m Heidi! I am a 50 lb 5 year old, spayed female, Wire haired Pointer. Don’t let my mature age fool you, I am full of energy and always on the go! I love to be around people; I’d love to follow you around the house all day and watch what you’re doing. I also like to sit on your feet and lean on you for a good pat. I love to run and follow my nose, and I don’t know what ‘come’ means yet, so I would need a fully fenced yard, and I may never be what people call an ‘off leash dog.’ I’d also need good, long walks or runs a few times a day. I’m beginning to learn what sit, lie down, off, and leave it mean. I don’t have much training, but I’m learning quickly! My previous owners said I wasn’t what you’d call ‘house trained’ but my foster people say I’m getting pretty good and I’m learning to go outside. I also don’t mind hanging out with other canine friends. I’m a sweet, loving girl that’s looking for my forever home.

Red, Longhaired Dachshunds: Helmut & Ursula

Our names are Helmut and Ursala, we are 5 year old Standard red longhaired dachshunds.. our former owners got us from a breeder with the intent of breeding us but it never happened, instead they got us “fixed”.

mom's iphone pics 344

Not to sound conceited, but we are simply gorgeous, we go to the groomer every 6 weeks, we also keep ourselves in great shape …. show quality; if we do say so ourselves. We would like to be adopted together because we are brother and sister and we stick together like family should! We do like to chase things so we will never be “off leash” dogs but that’s okay with us. We are both up to date on all shots and recently had our teeth cleaned, Helmut had his top 4 removed because they were wiggly….We don’t have accidents in the house, love our car rides and are affectionate but prefer older children and adults please.

No cats please!

German Wirehaired Pointer: GUS

On Hold for Adoption !

IMG_1449 Gus sit!

Russell is 5 – 6 year old GWP, who lived with two other dogs, but did not get out in the world much.  He was good with dogs he knew, but needed slow introductions to unknown dogs.  He came to Dogwood and spent the summer learning how to relax and greet other dogs politely.  Russell is now free of previous fears and enjoys his on leash walks.  He is very easy to walk as he does not pull and is easily corrected.  As he is new to us we have not had him off leash yet.

DSC_0196Gus lying down

Russell is very affectionate and would really love his own family where he will be cherished in a forever home.  He is good with people and makes friends wherever he goes.  He loves being petted, tummy rubs and will entertain himself with his toys. His foster parents get lots of comments about his handsome good looks.

Russell’s ideal home would have someone home much of the time, be active, and exhibit consistent, patient, and firm leadership to continue to reinforce the good manners Russell has learned this summer.

Like many sporting dogs, Russell is not good with cats and will not be placed in a home with cats.

Russell can’t wait to meet his new family.  Is it you?

He learns very quickly and loves to work and use his Big Brain! Rupee loves to run, jump, work and swim, so an active lifestyle with a family who loves the outdoors would be ideal for him.

Rupee 2

Labrador Retriever X: LUCY

On Hold for Adoption

Luce_labX-april2013

Lucy is a beautiful, loving girl who wants to be an important part of someones life. She is approximately 3 years old, perfect medium size and has been spayed and vaccinated. She is active and playful and loves to work at obedience as she is eager to please. She enjoys fetching and then lounging in front of the fireplace afterwards. She was picked up on the streets & has been given another chance – this girl deserves to find a wonderful new home. She is suited to an adult only home with someone who is active and is willing to continue her training. She has lived with other dogs and cats previously.

Lucy loves stuffies but mostly destroys them!  She is ok on leash, but at first is a little bit of a puller. She walks  with a martingale collar and a sensible harness. She is reactive meaning she will bark on leash towards dogs and people, but once properly introduced does great. She is currently working with her caregivers on her focus and thankfully she is very food motivated and wants to work for her treats! She is a jumper.when she first greets new guests – very bouncy however this can easily be curbed with proper training. She knows how to sit well, and like mentioned loves treats. Lucy is crate trained and slept in a crate in the bedroom at night. I dont’t think she was ever allowed on the bed, but that doesn’t mean she won’t try! She is not food/toy possesive with people at all.  The great thing with Lucy is that is that she is so lovey & responds very well to positive reinforcement. This very intelligent girl knows who is a leader and who is not and she will have you wrapped around her paw if you let her so if you are up to giving this young girl a loving environment and are dedicataed to continuing her training then Lucy will love to meet you!  Lucy is being fostered locally.

Labrador X: LULU

On Hold for Adoption !

Lulu_525710_10151813898120874_1057981315_n

Lulu is a friendly, spayed female,  two and a half year old chocolate lab mix.  She is housetrained and is gentle taking treats.  She knows sit, down and shake a paw, loves walks, car rides, playing with stuffy toys and other dogs.  Lulu tested well with cats in the shelter prior to coming to Dogwood, but is not living with cats in her foster home.

Lulu-1174945_10151814097015874_47727207_n

Lulu goes to day care a couple of days per week, where she is making lots of dog friends to play with and is a hit with the staff.  She interacts well with all sizes of dogs.  At her foster home, Lulu walks with a pack of dogs and humans which she enjoys.

She walks fairly well on leash, pulls occasionally and is easily corrected.  She is a strong girl, so may be a bit much for younger children to walk.

Lulu “talks” to you when she has an opinion; if you are not throwing the toy she wants or take too long to make breakfast, she will woo-woo-woo or sometimes bark a few times to get your attention.

Her foster family reports that she fit into their home right away and gets along well with their bigger dog and they are enjoying her very much. Lulu will make an excellent addition to your family!

Hi my name is Cody! I am a 80 lbs,  4 year old neutered black Lab and have a cool looking black spotted tongue so I might have a little Chow in me althought other breeds can carry the gene as well. My original family unfortunately had to give me up due to circumstances that were no fault of my own. I am your typical fun-loving happy dog who loves to play fetch and be around people. I am a mellow guy and love my walks !I am good with other dogs, love to play and I am good with children I do have a prey drive so absolutely NO cats  !

I am looking for my furever home and if you think you & I can be BFF I would love to  meet you!

Lab/Ridgeback X: CINNAMON

On Hold for Adoption!

IMG_0628

Meet Cinnamon! She is a 2 year old spayed female weighting 65 lbs. She was surrendered for no fault of her own as her family moved and could not take her.

20131216_202504

She has a lovely disposition, wanting to please, outgoing with very good focus however, she has been through a great deal after her family surrendered her to a shelter and frightens easily.

IMG_0618

Cinnamon needs just the right home that can help build her confidence to where it once was. A BFF who will spend time with her to help her intigrate into her new surroundings slowly. She loves to play fetch and focus games. Being a sensitive girl she can be frightened of thunder and loud noises. She will need a confident new BFF who can reasurre her that everything is ok.

To see a video of Cinnamon playing fetch click here!

Cinnamon would do well in a family with a regular routine, no children or cats.

Dachshund: ZOEY

Zoey

Zoe is adorable.  She is friendly, loving, funny and extremely active.  She loves to be outside as much as possible and on her walks she is happy to greet everyone including little children and most dogs.

zoey1234392_10151872175685874_266706607_n

She is always looking for cats and squirrels and pulls on her leash to try and get to them.  She has two speeds, very slow and very fast.  Zoe has recovered from her back injury.  When we go to a park she wants to run and in the house she tears around and tosses her toy high in the air.  Since I stopped crating her when I go out, she now goes in it on her own for naps and sometimes sleeps in it at night.  She just doesn’t want the door closed.  She usually only barks when she hears someone at the door or a doorbell ring on TV.  Zoe wants her breakfast as soon as we get up, this is a good thing because she is always looking to eat stuff off the ground.  She won’t do her business until she has walked at least a couple blocks and she does not have accidents in the house.

Plott Hound: GUINNESS

009_9 - Copy (2)

Guinness is a 6 or 7 year old nuetered Plott hound.

He Doesnt like yelling or when you eave he will tremble but gets over it.

URGENT!

Labrador/Border Collie X: VIN

Hawaii, new property, Vin 136_LR

Meet Vin a 4 year old, male, neutered Lab/Border Collie Xwho very sadly needs a new furever home due to no fault of his own.

Hawaii, new property, Vin 1371_LR

Vin’s dad is moving and cannot take him with him. Vin was rescued via Dogwood Rescue at approx 1 yr old and adopted by his current owner. He has lived on property in the country for these last years and has been a constant companion to his Dad. He is very affectionate, smart, enthusiastic and house trained. He also does not wander off the property.

Vin has many of the border collie traits and tends to herd naturally. He is not good with children as exposure has been very limited and tends to be afraid of them therefor we would prefer a home with no kids. We also do not know how he is with cats so a home without cats is is also preferred.

Hawaii, new property, Vin 131_croppedLR

Vin is being fostered locally and if you feel you can give this boy the love he deserves please email DogwoodRescue@icloud.com

German Wirehaired Pointer: HEIDI

DSCF2665

Leonberger X: HENRIK

Type of Dog:  Leonberger X

Age:  2 years

Size:  Large

UPDATE ! Help us help Henrik!  There is a Silent Auction taking place to help pay for the extensive surgeries that Henrik has had plus 1 or 2 that still need to happen … go to this link to check it out  http://msherbuck.wix.com/henrik-silentauction#!ABOUT US|csgz

You can also make a donation that will go directly to his vet bills … anything that you can donate is greatly appreciated!

Here is Henrik’s story:

Henrik is a young Leonberger cross who needs extensive orthopedic surgery. This is not the first time we have posted a plea for donations for Henrik on this page. In the early winter, Henrik’s owner surrendered him after he was hit by a car. At this time, he had a broken femur and we were able to pull enough   money together for costly orthopedic surgery. Donations from generous supporters helped immensely.

Initially, we were thrilled with the progress Henrik was making, and at the same time, we learned that Henrik is loving, gentle and affectionate.

In late December, things changed. Sadly, Henrik was not making the progress, we had hoped for. We learned that he has extensive damage to his knees (Henrik is only two.) We also learned that there is a fracture in his hip that was likely a result of the car accident but was not caught at the time. Henrik is going to need much more surgery. If you can help with a donation it would be much appreciated. No amount is too small.

To all of you who previously given, thank you! We appreciate the kindness that the community has shown toward Henrik and several of our other dogs.

Labrador / Leopard Catahoula X: STRIKER

image

Hi my name is striker & I am a Lab & Catahoula leopard dog Cross. I must say I have an amazing disposition, well natured, calm & happy to do whatever.

image-3

I am okay to walk on leash, pull a bit but with some training I’ll walk with proper manners! I live with a couple of cool pooches & love meeting and being with other dogs, children and adults, and I’m not a problem with cats!  My recall skills are okay, inside they are great but outside I can be a bit stubborn. I need your help to teach me proper manners! I am happy to lay on my bed in the house & chill out …  and not a problems being left alone as long as it isn’t for long stretches at a time. I am looking for a loving home that will have time to brush up on my recall, leash walking skills and other manners. Oh and I love to chase balls but won’t bring them back all the time … another area I would love to learn more about! Overall I am a very happy dog looking for my BFF … could that be you ?

Shihtzu X: COLE

On Hold for Adoption !

SONY DSC

Cole is a cute black and white 9 year old Shiht-zhu mix.  Cole recently lost his family due to health problems of his former owner.  He would love to have a new family to love and share cuddles with.

IMG_2089 Cole

Cole walks nicely on leash wearing his new red harness.  He likes his walks, but is not high energy.  Cole would be a great companion for a senior, retired person, or someone who works from home as he is used to having someone at home. Cole is good company and is never far from his family. He is house trained and has used a doggy door.  Cole likes car rides and playing with a ball. Cole loves to snuggle and would love to sleep on the foot of your bed, but will settle into his own bed nearby. He has been accustomed to older children and is good with other dogs we’ve met on our walks, making lots of friends at day care. Cole, like many dogs, will chase cats and squirrels if given the chance.

Do you have room in your heart and home for Cole?

Shepherd/Husky X: KODA

koda-26211993-1-large
Koda is a 6year old spayed shepherd cross husky. She is overweight right now weighing in around 85-90 pounds. She is available for adoption because her elderly owner can no longer care for her. She has been very much loved for her whole life, but recently she has not been getting out as much, thus she has gained some weight!

Koda-26211993-2-large

Koda is very sweet and gentle. She is a little insecure but once she starts socializing more and getting regular walks she should gain more confidence.

Koda is good with dogs. She doesn’t want to play, she would rather just ignore the other dogs right now. She grew up with a child but would probably like to live with only adults because she is very used to sedate living with just one older woman. She lived with cats and is good with them. She Loves to fetch and go for walks. Koda does bark at the mail man or someone entering the house, but will settle down when told to.

Koda would love a gentle new owner who can continue to socialize and train her.

Ollie2

Meet Oliver aka Ollie! He is a Boxer/ Shar Pei cross and is brindle.

This guy is a sweetheart! He is about 4 yrs old and is nuetered. He is super friendly and very bouncy.

Ollie3

Loves to play tugawar and with toys. He is ok on leash but does pull a little bit. We think he is ok with other dogs but does need to continue his socializing. Because Ollie is so bouncy he would likely knock small kids over, so he is looking for a family with older kids or no children at all. He really is adorable, he looks like a cartoon character.

He is being fostered in Delta.

Labrador Retriever: HARLEY

On Hold for Adoption !

HarleyLAB-IMG_3767

This 10 year old boy is needing a new home and this is no fault of his own. Sadly, there have been some major life changes within his family and they can no longer take care of him.

HarleyLAB-IMG_3771

Harley is your typical english Labrador, laid back, gentle and unassuming and focussed on his human companion(s). This boy loves to soak up the attention! He is used to daily off leash walks where he can sniff and explore alongside his human. He stays close to you and does not wander. This boy has been raised in a large family with children of all ages. He has also shared his home with cats and when meeting new feline friends he would rather not bother – he simply turns away from them. Harley is currently living with 2 other large dogs and is polite to new doggie friends although he is more into his human(s) than other dogs!

Harley is a big boy and needs the right BFF to help him lose some weight. Having children around also means that there are often food bits to clean up off the floors which he does very well !

This gentle senior would love to live in a home where he can continue to take in daily walks and be a part of the household. He knows all the basic commands plus some and LOVES his treats – being a Lab he is very food motivated!

They boy does not have an ounce of prey-drive either … in fact there are many rabbits living around his home & he may lift his head to check out what they are doing and that is about it. Live & let live is his motto! Harley also loves the water, riding in cars, hanging out  by your side and would make an excellent companion for another senior … perhaps that is you !

German Shorthaired Pointer: ANNIE

P1010291

Annie is an 11 year old GSP, in good health and loves to eat and exercise.

IMG_03072

She gets along with other dogs and children and walks on a walking harness. Annie would do best  in a home where someone works from home or is home most of the time as she does have some separation anxiety. She would do very well with a loving senior who she can shower affection & love on! She is a senior so does not require as much exericse as a young dog, although she is still very active !

Border Collie X: BUCKLEY

Buckley – Border Collie Mix
Buckley is a 6 year old (approximately) male, Border Collie that was adopted a few months ago from the Peace River SPCA and is unfortunately up for adoption again. All the Border Collie rescues are full at the moment so this boy needs an experienced and dedicated home that will continue to work with him.
Buckley came to his family with no training and has since improved incredibly over the few months he’s been with them. He walks well on a leash and has good recall off leash. He doesn’t show much interest in wanting to interact with other dogs, however he does not display and aggression.
The reason his family are giving him up is they have two young children who they feel Buckley is not getting along with. He has growled at their children over food and when the kids have touched him. He has not snapped or bitten a child but the owners are finding that it is too much work trying to constantly manage both the children and their dog.
Buckley would do well in a breed savy, active home with older children and no small pets. He will require a confident and consistent leader who can create boundaries and routine.

Bichon Frise X: OLIVER

Oliver_27302978-1-large

Oliver is an energetic Bichon X.  Not sure what he is crossed with, but he is quite the looker and definitely larger than a typical Bichon weighing in at about 30lbs.  He loves affection, and will do well with an owner that is willing to train him and help direct his high energy.  His feisty, high energy can be too much for small children, so a home with adults only, or older children is recommended.

American Staffordshire/Terrier X: ROSCO

Rosco_BC167.25986384-2-x

Rosco is a handsome 4 year old male Staffie mix with a big heart and a gentle demeaner.
Rosco-BC167.25986384-1-xHe’s a softie who loves people and affection and has lived happily with other dogs although he needs calm introductions to other dogs when first meeting them. He swims and loves to play with toys. He loves games, and will play tug with anyone who offers. Rosco is a medium energy dog who’s fit and healthy. He walks softly and calmly on his leash when he’s exercised daily . He loves to travel and explore the world with his people and other dog friends. Rosco doesn’t like loud sounds and can be fearful ( flight ) in new or chaotic situations. He will not be able to go to off leash parks until he is settled into his new family and feeling more comfortable. Rosco would be happiest in a home with adults and teenagers, but could also live with another balanced dog.

Vizslas: BRANDY & FLURRY

IMG_0028

Hi,  we are Flury and Brandy. We are 8 year old Vizsla sisters. We come into the wonderful hands of Dogwood Rescue after our elderly owner passed away. We loved our dad, and the 3 of us were best friends. Because he was elderly he didn’t go out much, so we kept him company at home. Because of this we are nervous in new places and tend to become a statue if we are unsure of something. We are getting more and more confident but we would really like a quite calm home. Running around kids and noisy teens would be a little much for us!

IMG_0030

We get along with the other dogs here, but we don’t play, we just ignore them. They are too goofy for us. Once we are comfortable then you will see our goofy side. Sometime we are conversations with each other, and everyone looks at us like we nuts! We do like to bark at the scary things outside.

We like going out for walks, but we haven’t been on a leash much. We don’t pull but will tie you up in a knot! Once we get more comfortable we will LOVE walks.

We would really like to find a new home together. We keep each other company and that is all we have ever known. So please open up you heart and home for 2 sweet Vizsla girls looking for their retirement home! Now we may be seniors and a little out of shape, but we still have some energy and like to go out and about!

Catahoula X: PIPER

On Hold for Adoption !

IMG_0283

Piper came to Dogwood Rescue Society with her sister, Olive. Even though Piper considers herself to be prettier than her sister, Olive already landed in her furever home and now Piper needs a big break. She has not had a lot of luck and she does not understand when we tell her that her profile is getting stale. In fact, she is rather offended by this notion! We know that Piper would make an outstanding pet for the right person so we continue on our quest to find that special person, who is sporting breed savvy, for Piper to love.

IMG_0302small

Piper is a sweet and affectionate 4 year old Catahoula or Catahoulu mix. She weighs about 50 pounds. Piper would be most comfortable as a single dog in a home with a fenced yard. She loves to snuggle, have her belly scratched and is incredibly willing to please.

Piper takes time to accept new dogs and will require an experienced and patient handle.  She has made many new doggy friends but she needs to be sure that new dogs are “cool” enough before they can get to know her better!

Piper did fantastic in her basic obedience training class and has quite impressive recall. She also just finished an intensive 2 week ‘board & train’ concentrating on proper socialization skills with other dogs. Her new handler will be required to work with her trainer to go over all that Piper has learned. Training was required and is to be maintained, to help Piper with specific issues related to meeting new dogs when particularly while on leash. She can also be a bit protective of her “people”. She listens very well, wants to please and is highly food motivated! It’s possible that Piper may have a slight hearing issue so using hand signals or a whistle will benefit her ongoing training.

IMG_0299small

This girl loves to run! She’d make a fantastic running partner and will also run nicely alongside a bike with you. If you’re an active person but also enjoy time to sit back and relax with just you and your dog, Piper may be just the match for you!

No cats or children please!

Labrador/Rhodesian Ridgeback/Terrier X: VIOLET

2013-10-02 19.06.32

 Meet Violet!

Violet is an affectionate, loyal, intelligent and goofy dog who quickly bonds with the people she meets. She loves playing in the woods and in the water.

IMG_20130509_005729

She is a 2 year old spayed female mix (½ Labrador Retriever, ¼ Rhodesian Ridgeback and ¼ Pitbull Terrier) and weighs roughly 70 pounds. She was adopted from the SPCA and is tattooed. She is healthy and up to date on vaccines including rabies and her dog license is valid until November 30, 2013. She is house trained, likes cats and snuggling with her ‘person’ but is anxious around kids. She is currently unreliable off leash so a fenced yard would be best (she’s a bit over stimulated at dog parks.) The right home for her includes owners who are consistent with their training techniques.

387170_253809664740036_1959467185_n

Needs:

  • a child free home
  • 2 hours off-leash exercise everyday
  • medication once a week that completely controls her spay incontinence
  • Wish list:
  • a home with a dog companion of her size who likes her silly playing style
  • someone who has experience with high energy breeds
  • a home with an enclosed outdoor space
  • an owner who would be interested in continuing her ‘clicker’ training

Wirehaired Dachshunds: BADGER & BETTYBOOP

Meet Badger & BettyBoop! Badger is male neutered 22lbs and losing ounces by the minute. Bettyboop/female, spayed, 17 lbs. All shots are current. Both dogs were born in April of 2006. The two are brother and sister and we would like to keep this bonded pair together. If you like Dachshunds, you will love this pair of siblings. If you like to cuddle up with your 4 legged friends, these two love to snuggle while you read, watch TV or knit. They will provide warm comfort during those special moments that you have to yourself.   Whether it is their paraphernalia or people, Better Boop casts a watchful eye on all that is going on. Badger and Better Boop are “tag team” thing going when it comes to their toys, blankets, bones and food. Badger will, however, call in the troops, i.e. the humans, to get what he considers to be his belongings back to his mat.  At the very least, the humans interfere just enough so that Badger can get his toys back from Betty. Betty and Badger sleep through the night in their basket in the master bedroom or in a crate in the family room. Both dogs have been in a day care before.  They have frequently been with other small Dachshunds as well. Betty and Badger need to be leashed when leaving the house. Any little thing will lead them to run off. A slightly open door is an invitation for adventure to this duo, so care is needed. These dogs love car rides, outdoor coffee shops, parks, beaches, and gathering the news on the street during local walks. Interested to know more about Badger & BettyBoop? email:  DogwoodRescue@shaw.ca

Flat Coated Retriever: BENTLEY

Bentley_IMG_7518

This is Bentley! He is aprox 1-2 years old, 45 lbs, super friendly and smart!

Bentley_IMG_7512

Bentley sits, shakes a paw & lays down on command so someone has obviously worked with him before he was picked up as a stray. Sadly, no one came forward to claim him. He is good with other dogs, outgoing, well socalized & wanting to please. Bentley’s focus is excellent, loves to play fetch & is leash trained.

Bentley is very good with the office cat at the shelter, good with children with no signs of prey drive. This boy deserves a fresh start! If you are looking for a young dog that will fit into family life and are willing to give him the exercise, training and love that he deserve then he IS the dog for you!

Please note that we have had an overwhelming response to adopt Bentley! In the case that another home is selected for this boy please do take a look at the other dogs listed below to see if there is a 2nd choice that appeals to you.

Weimaraner: ANNIE

Alli-BC167.17341759-2-x

Annie is a beautiful mature purebred Weimaraner who is desperately seeking a new family to be a part of. She is 6 years old, spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, micro-chipped and house trained. She knows her basic commands and walks well on a leash with a haltie.

Annie has previously lived in a home with older children and other dogs and greatly enjoyed the attention for her family members. She is not a big player with other dogs and often chooses to ignore them, but does socialize well when she wants to. Annie has shown zero interest in cats or small/farm animals. Annie bonds very quickly to people and is eager to please.

Alli-BC167.17341759-3-x

Annie requires a home that has a fenced yard as when left alone for long periods of time does exhibit separation anxiety and may try to escape to find her humans. She will require a very active home as her previous owners were runners and often ran (10k is her max distance). She also loves her walks, park adventures and hiking.

Annie has allergies to grass and hay and will require regular medication to control her itching. She may also need continuing care to keep her ears healthy and free from infections.

Annie will try take any food left out and will get into the garbage as she was neglected by a previous owner who almost starved her to death and she has trouble remembering that there is in fact a meal coming next. This can easily be managed by placing food in hard to reach places and securing garbage.

Annie needs an active home, regular medication and and care.

German Wirehaired Pointer: LITTLE BOY

On Hold for Adoption !

This is the most adorable, tiny short coat GWP I have met. His tail is always wagging and he is a happy little dog.

He is smart, well-behaved, (although he could use some leash training,) and his recall is not bad in the yard but outside the yard, it is non-existent.. He is being fostered with three other dogs and enjoys playing with them. Around people he wants to cuddle with everyone. He is probably about 1. 5 yr. – 2 yr. old because he is very puppyish in his behaviour. He has energy to burn and he is very “birdy” so definitely no cats, ducks, bunnies in his future home. This little boy will need a special home which can provide the exercise he needs.

German Wirehaired Pointer: BRISCO

On Hold for Adoption !

Type of Dog: German Wirehaired Pointer (Male)

Size: Medium (60lbs)

Colour: Liver (Grey)

Age: 14 months

Hello, my name is Brisco. I am a handsome German Wirehaired Pointer pup. My young age and my excitement for life make me an active, happy go lucky and silly puppy. I am looking to find a forever home that can offer me consistency, obedience training and loving structure. I have not had formal training at this point in my young life, but I am so bright and eager to please. I know that with your commitment to my learning, I can be a wonderful family dog.

Because I am still a young pup, I would do best in a household without small children. My excitement for life and my activity may bump or knock little children over. I do love children though and I love to give kisses and be cuddled. I play hard with other dogs – but being a silly boy, this is natural for me. I like other dogs  and would really love to have another doggie companion to play with!   I respond well to correction, especially if you are offering a treat! I need assistance on a lead, and to learn recall skills and manners. I haven’t met cats yet – stay tuned.

I am looking for a foster or adoptive family urgently. If you think you have the time and the place in your heart for a young, handsome boy like me – I will offer you lots of happiness and an active lifestyle for years to come.

Dachshund/Chiweenie: Roo

On Hold For Adoption !

RooMEET ROO. Adorable, well loved dachshund/Chihuahua mix, weighing in at eight pounds 1 ounce.  Her color pattern is similar to a jersey cow. She’s black and white. Her coat is smooth and short.  Her family is moving overseas and sadly must give up this favorite little girl.  The same as any Dachshund; she can be stubborn, and likes to dig, She barks when the door bell rings or if she hears another dog barking.  Roo loves to sleep with her human! She is very affectionate. Roo is a very good girl and is always happy. Roo doesn’t mind being picked up and carried. She has a sweet personality and loves to be loved. She loves to nap and is definitely a lap dog as well. She Roo2gives lots of love and kisses to everyone. She has many toys to play with and is used to a large fenced yard.

Border Collie/Australian Kelpie X: HARLEY GIRL

HarleyCollie_26387762-1-large

Harley is a seven and a half month old border collie/ cattle dog/ australian kelpie cross. She is house trained, up to date with her shots, and weighs about 20-25 pounds right now. She is such a sweetie!

HarleyCollieX-26387762-2-large

Her current owner has a new living situation and sadly can not keep Harley. Harley is really smart, ball motivated, and is good with other dogs. She loves to go for hikes, and would love a new owner to take out for adventures. She loves belly rubs and is very affectionate with her family. Harley’s only issue is that she is scared of new people. She will bark at people if they stare at her or bend over her. She is curious and would like to sniff the stranger, but still needs to gain confidence, and she needs direction from her handler. This behaviour is still mild, and she is still very young, so proper socialization and training will really help her become a more confident girl.

She is obedient and already knows many commands such as: sit, down, drop it, paw, shake, and come. Harley would excel at agility or flyball! We are looking for a home with no children, and someone who has experience training dogs. She could live with a cat, or another dog.

Terrier Mix: Kerrie

On Hold For Adoption !

Kerrie is a young, sweet girl, likely no more than two years old. She can be timid of new people and new situations at first, but once she is more comfortable, she comes out of her shell. She is a terrier cross after all.

She is very affectionate and loves to snuggle with her foster mom and dad, and is very playful with other dogs. She is currently in a home with another dog and they get along very well, wrestling and chasing one another both in and outside the house. Like a true terrier, Kerrie has lots of energy and will make a great running or hiking partner.

She will need someone with the patience to teach her proper doggie manners. Although she is housebroken and has good recall once familiar with her people, she lacks knowledge of basic training or commands, but she is a smart little girl and will learn quickly. She also needs an owner who will not reinforce her fears. Kerrie got off to a bad start as she was kept in a shed and had a litter of puppies. Now, she is spayed, and all of this is behind her.

Kerrie will do best in an active adult home or a home with older kids as she is a bit unsure of smaller children. She doesn’t seem to care for cats much, either. She has tonnes of character, and lots of love & kisses to give. She will be the perfect addition to the right home!

Springer Spaniel: NICHOLAS

On Hold for Adoption !

nicholas-image-1

Nicholas 9 year old Springer Spaniel & helost the home he has lived in since he was a puppy, through no fault of his own, due to unforeseen family circumstances.  Nick is now looking for his new family.

nicholas-26580620-1-large

Nick’s foster family find him to be a delightful companion.  Nick is a very gentle, cheerful and friendly soul with that wonderful Springer personality and joy of living.  He is quiet in the house and loves to be with people so you will usually find Nick at your feet or close by.  Nick has grown up with children & attended puppy kindergarten and obedience classes with his original family, so he exhibits good house manners and can sit, down, shake, wait, stay (inside, haven’t tried it outside yet),  and he walks very nicely on leash.  When playing fetch, which he loves, he brings the ball back and drops it at your feet. He likes the water.

Nick is currently living with another dog and gets along very well with him.  He greets other dogs while on leash or off without any problems. Nick has been a gentleman both at the groomer and the vet. Don’t let Nick’s age deter you from giving this wonderful dog a place in your family.

He is in good health, has lots of energy and loves to play ball, go for walks and be active. One thing for Nick’s new family to be aware of is that he is afraid of feathers! Nick has all the good qualities that you could ask for in a new best friend.

Kids 12 or older OK.

He is not suitable for a home with cats. Leonardo may feel threatened by large dogs. Leonardo likes meeting small dogs and people on walks.

He is  gentle with humans and oh so playful — loves to chase his toys!  He loves going to daycare where he can show how social he is.

Labrador Retriever X: TRI-TIP

On Hold for Adoption !

Tri-tip gets along with cats and is fine with other dogs after a few days. She is really good with people and kids . She is ok on the leash but still pulls. She hates the water. She loves being inside. Loves laying next to you. She won’t steal food off the table if you are not looking (for the most part : )

She is protective of the family. If you pretend to be hitting someone and they start to say ouch, she will get her nose between the 2 people and start to nudge them apart. When our little one was learning how to crawl, she would stand over him and move over the baby as he would crawl. He would lay on Tri-Tip and play, once he was pulling her ear and she gently moved his arm with her mouth.  She likes keeping your bed warm when you get up in the middle of the the night . When you come back to bed you just giver her a look and she jumps off the bed. She is spayed, and as far as we know she is in good health.

Labrador Retriever X: OLIVER

On Hold for Adoption !

OliverMexMutt-BC167.25655713-2-x

Meet Oliver. He is what some people would refer to as a Mexican mutt. You won’t hurt his feelings if you say this around him. He possibly has a some lab and Rhodesian Ridge in him.

Oliver_mexmutt

Oliver is only 2 years old and his energy level is high. He is happy go lucky and very sweet, but hyper, friendly and very excitable. As you can probably tell, Oliver needs a lot of exercise! He will need some obedience training as well. At this point, he responds only to the command sit. He is super food motivated! He is very eager to learn, so he should be fun to train. Oliver will react to other dogs when he is on the leash and needs to work on his leash manners in general.

He could probably live with a cat. At this point in time, he is too hyper to live with kids. Overall, Oliver’s charm makes up for what he lacks on leash. If you are very active and looking for a dog with a lot of spunk, you probably should look at Oliver.

Weimaraner: TITAN

Titan-25282924-2-petnoteTitan is a 7 year old Weimaraner who is active and friendly! He listens well to his foster mom and is getting along well with the other weimaraner in the home.

Titan-Tia-WP_20130126_009[1]

Within days of arrival, his calm, loyal, affectionate happy self has emerged. He sleeps in a crate with his “teddy bear”, and loves to tease humans with balls, or toys to get them to play or pet him. He is easy to handle for tooth and coat brushing, ear cleaning, and full inspection of eyes, and coat. He has a good appetite, and enjoys his treats enormously. This boy loves to play fetch. He is quite tolerant of other dogs unless startled on leash and then he will bark. It is clear he has had some formal training in the past, and still does an amazing “obedience style sit. He has also gone hunting before. His leash skills are good. He has been well-socialized with people of all ages, including very young children. Titan is sweet, very energetic, and active, which is normal to the breed. He is good with other dogs, but not with cats.

German Shorthaired Pointer: OAKLEY

Oakley is a wonderful 5 year old purebreed German Shorthaired Pointer who has been in foster care for too long and is looking for her forever home. Oakley is spayed and up-to-date with her vaccinations.

Oakley is amazing with men, women and children of all ages. She is good with other dogs. However, Oakley would not do well in a home that has small dogs or cats as she does have a high prey drive that is typically found in Pointers.

Oakley is a very high energy dog that will require either a breed-savy home or one that has experienc dealing with energetic dogs. Oakley will require regular exercise that includes walks, runs and playing with her ball. She would also excell at dog sports like agility and flyball. Without constant and routine exercise Oakley will get bored which can result in her trying to escape her back yard. She will therefore need a backyard with atleast 6 feet secure fencing.

Oakley is a wonderful family dog but has a high prey drive and will therefore not do well in a household with cats or small animals.

German Shorthaired Pointer: TRAVIS

Travis_BC167.25898933-2-x

Travis is a pure bred German Short Haired Pointer. Age 9, he has had a few different homes and now we want to find him a final family where he can live out his life surrounded with love. His first owner put lots of time in to train him for agility competitions, and he remains a well trained animal with excellent recall and good heel, stay and wait.

Travis_BC167.25898933-1-x

He loves obstacles, ramps and tunnels. Well used to even the smallest children, he can sometimes however  not know his own strength or size, so little kids may not be best for Travis. We are not sure how he is with cats, but is generally fine with other dogs and all people. His trademark greeting is to lean in, and sit on your feet. Although a little slower these days, he proved himself to be an excellent dog as a mountain biking, and/or trail running companion. Not keen on water, he has never swam! Wade at best.

Travis is Very food focused, he can unfortunately be tempted to take from counters, and all temptations should be removed. On the other hand this will make additional training very easy for his new owners! He would do very well with regular exercise, and was a instant success with the tracking courses he participated in a few years ago.  He has been well cared for and very much loved. Is in excellent health, and presents no resistance when nails needed clipped, or any wounds needed cleaned. Travis is a very happy dog, and will make a great new companion! He is currently living in Squamish.

German Shorthaired Pointer: VINNY AKA BOGART

On Hold for Adoption !

Vinny came to Dogwood Rescue as a stray, therefore we don’t know much about his previous history. He is approximately 5 years old, neutered, crate trained and is the biggest cuddle-bug out there.

Vinny has excellent manners around other dogs of all breeds and sizes. He goes to daycare and lives with another GSP. He likes to keep to himself and isn’t too keen on playing with other dogs; however he loves being in the company of other dogs and watching them play. He hasn’t displayed any aggression over food or around other dogs; he will simply remove himself from the situation if a dog is in his face.

Vinny is very friendly with all people he meets and is always trying to get attention. He is good with children but will sometimes gently nip your hand if you ignore him so he would not be suitable in a home with young children. He appears to be good with dog-savvy cats.

Vinny is almost house trained, and if he is taken out frequently he doesn’t have any accidents. He is learning how to walk nicely on a leash, but is not suitable to be off leash as of right now as he is still working on his recall. He knows his basic commands of sit, stay, shake and lay down.

Vinny would do well in an environment where someone is home during the day, or were someone is flexible and able to come visit him during the day. He doesn’t like to be left alone and will bark sometimes, however he is not destructive. Like all Pointers, Vinny is very food motivated and will get into garbage or will counter-surf is there is food left out.

Due to a previous injury, Vinny has some skin issues that cause him to lick his front legs which has caused a graniloma. He is on medication and it is starting to heal. He will need to wear a cone when not supervised to prevent licking. Potential adopters need to be aware that his skin condition may never 100% heal and he may need antibiotics and cream for the rest of his life.

Weimaraner: HAYDEN

Hayden has a nice nature, loves people and being petted. He is very submissive and painfully shy.  He needs a person that will work on his socialization without coddling him and feeling sorry for him, one who will help him move forward in a matter of fact way.

Hayden is unsocialized with dogs. He is very fearful around them and will bite at  dogs who come near. Hayden doesn’t know  how to relate to strange dogs. He did live with another weimaraner previously. When he first arrived at his foster home, he was so scared  that he didn’t relieve himself for 24 hours and needed to be hand fed.
Hayden will go in a crate and he should be in a crate unless you are working with him or can be with him as he may be fear aggressive with other dogs in the house.  He feels safe in his crate.  You allow him to come out of the crate in his own time, you can’t force him.  Be with him in the moment, train in small time increments.  He needs a calm firm voice, no loud voices.
Hayden has some recall in the yard, but it has to be secure, he will bolt if scared.  He needs a secure collar such as a martingale collar, no flat collars as he could slip out of it. Hold onto the leash, as he will bolt  if startled.
Haden will sit, but not lie down. All in all Hayden will need a breed savvy owner who is familiar working with fear aggression. Hayden has made grand steps forward with the guidance of his trainer/foster mom and we see him progressing further eventually gaining trust in his surroundings. No children and we are unsure of cats.

Chihuahua/Dachshund: ANDY – Adopted

andy-26453239-1-large

Andy is a perfect little 7 pound package of pure chiweenie love! It’s hard to believe this 1 ½ year old tiny sweetie was unwanted and tossed away– handed over by his former owner without a backwards glance or goodbye. He is nothing but pure sweetness, light and joy. Oh and KISSES!! Lots and lots of KISSES!

Andy3

Andy tries hard to please and is very much tuned into his handler. His foster mom says he doesn’t stray or run away and comes easily when called, wiggling with excitement. He is very timid and is easily frightened so would do best in an easygoing adult home without kids. Regular routines make him feel happy and secure!

Andy is low man on the totem pole in pack terms, so would not do well with super dominant dogs. His foster mom says he gets along great with her pack of three little ones as they are all pretty easy going.

His new owner should take special care while feeding to make sure he is safely separated in his own area so he can eat without being stressed by other dogs or distractions. Though he might bark once or twice when someone new comes to the door, overall he is a very quiet little guy.

Andy is fine with cats and is leash and potty trained. He loves his crate and happily snuggles up inside for the night and never makes a peep until it’s time to get up! He loves to go for walks and exploring the yard. What he likes best is snuggling in your lap. To get comfy, he burrows his nose in the crook of your arm or neck and gives a happy little groan of contentment!

Andy is neutered and up to date with his vaccinations, worming and flea control.

Otis is a 5 month, 8 lb neutered male puppy. This darling is content on his own but also loves playing with other dogs. He’s a little shy but is still curious about meeting new people and dogs all sizes. Otis does well with children as he is very calm. He rarely barks and loves treats. Otis is almost house broken and can go for many hours without an accident. He loves cuddling but is also ok being left alone while you go to work. This little guy will bring a lot of joy into your life!

Dachshunds: SADIE (Mai) & BELLA (Bunny)

Sadie3

Hi I’d like to introduce you to Sadie (Mae) with the black nose, and Bella (Bunny) with the brown nose.

Sadie is a seven year old mini Dachshund who is very playful and cuddly.  She is very interested in cats, much to their dismay, and loves to burrow and has taken an interest to running on leash.

Bella4

Bella is a four year old, is a lover and has learned that although she may be interested in  cats, they do not appreciate the attention. She will steer clear after enough warnings from the cat. Bella likes to run on a leash also and is very affectionate. Bella is very teachable and loves the praise that comes with good behavior.

Both ladies are house trained and do very well overnight (even with an early bedtime).  They go outside first thing in the morning and do their business routinely. They are not food possessive and do not bite.  They appear to do well with children but I’m uncertain of very young children (babies – 2 year olds). They sleep well in their own bed.  They love their morning and evening walks/runs and need to get exercise daily. They love car rides and are generally all round good natured little dogs although they do not like the rain or snow because of their short hair and bare undercarriage.

Shar Pei X: KOALA

On Hold for Adoption!

Koala-BC167.25736658-2-x

Meet Koala the little dog who acts like a Koala bear! He is a Shar Pei mix. He is about 4 or 5 years old and is neutered, house trained, and up to date with his shotss

Koala-BC167.25736658-1-xKoala is such a snuggle bug! He latches onto you like a koala bear and just sits still while you hug and pet him. He is very adorable. He is definitely a SharPei maybe some cattle dog mixed in. He appears to be 35-40 pounds (a little thick he could lose 2-3 pounds) You can’t tell from the pictures but in person it’s very evident that he is Shar Pei. He’s got the little ears, short muzzle, coarse coat, curly tail and extra skin!

He’s so calm and quiet in the house a very mellow guy. Outside on walks he is active and ready to check out the world. He pulls a bit but he is learning good leash manners. He does check in with his walker and would be able to be an off leash dog.

He’s a happy, easy going guy. He is great with other dogs, seems to be OK with cats, and is good with children. He doesn’t appear to have any fear or separation anxiety.

Koala was a stray so we have no history on him. He doesn’t appear to know any commands, but is very willing to listen and learn. He is new to our rescue and we will keep his profile updated with his progress!

He is being fostered in North Vancouver.

Weimaraner: MURRAY

On Hold for Adoption !

Type of Dog:  WeimaranerAge:  AdultSize:  67 lbs.Colour:  Grey/Silver

Meet Murray!

I’m a handsome, gentle and kind soul.  I am about 3 ?  years old with a beautiful smile, a love of life and a new found freedom.  I have just recovered from surgery removing my right leg – and relieving me of a painful injury I incurred in my younger years.  I wasn’t well looked after until now and I am loving being active again and making my way in the world on three legs.  I’m doing really well – watch me go!  You’ll be knocked off your feet how agile and energetic I am.  Even though I am an athlete, I’m gentle with people and other dogs.

I have a medium energy level – even on three legs.  I am neither dominant nor submissive – just a nice middle-of-the road kind of guy. I’m in beautiful condition.   I’m really not special needs – I’m just special.  Before I was taken in by Dogwood Rescue Society, I had a problem with my right leg. When I started limping I was taken into the veterinary hospital and was told I had an old injury to my hock that probably occurred when I was a year old.  Because of my old injury my hock joint was unstable and when I was playing with the other dogs in my foster home that instability caused the rupture between the tibia (shin bone) and talus bone (in the paw) by severing the ligaments in my hock and tearing my Achilles tendon.   It was decided that amputation was the best option for me to have a normal life. We Weim’s do very well on 3 legs – doesn’t slow me down a bit! I’ve even returned to my mountain hikes. I am recovering beautifully and doing all the things I did before – without any pain and hesitation.

If you are looking for a great, handsome gentleman, that amazes everyone around you with his unique talent to outrun most dogs – I’m your guy!  Please come and meet me, I am looking for a great family to please and have endless fun with.

Bentley is an owner surrender. His family’s health has declined so he
needs to find a new home that has the time and energy to take care of

Bentley is a energetic, happy dog who loves walking, running and
cuddling up to you watching t.v. He is a protective dog as he will
notice anyone who enters our yard and will let us know! I’ve had
Bentley since he was a pup and since then he has been living
with my family and I (all adults). He is well trained to come, sit
etc and sleeps quietly every night on his favourite pillow. He loves
having a yard as he chases and barks at birds and squirrels that
come into his view. He is very sharp and trainable if you put the

I’m a 13 year old Vizsla and have had a great life until I recently lost my devoted person. My name is Rusty, the colour of my short fur, and you’ll see there’s still a lot of spunk in me. Bet I can walk as long and far as you can!

I think I would likea family where someone is home and there is  another dog with whom I can play. I don’t like being left alone in a crate.  Ihave lived with cats and kids but I prefer older, sensible  kids.  I am very smart and energetic for my age.  I  need a fenced yard and someone who will really pay attention to me.

Lab/Border Collie X: FRANCIS

On Hold for Adoption !

Francis is a lovely boy who wants to please! He is people focussed and is polite although he still needs help working on his manners when he greets people as he does like to jump up … he’s just so excited to meet his new friends! He is great with children and other dogs … all round a model dog that will make an excellent addition for anyone ! He has a prey drive so absolutely no cats or other small animals. He shows great interest in birds so sharing his new home with one is not a good idea ! He loves to chase squirrels being the little hunter he is  … your yard will be safe! A well maintained 7 ft fence will be needed as Francis has scaled a 6 ft fence with success. BUT if he is entertained and exercised he will settle right in and be happy to hang by your side!

Read on … a note from his foster mom:

“Francis is a people dog. He loves to please but gets very focused on squirrels, birds, cats and I could not call his name to distract him.  He was great with my kids, running around with them. He has a lot of energy initially, but once he gets that burst out he is fine. He needs to get the run out of him and then he will be good on a leash.  He was great around my dogs. And when put with a bunch of dogs at the kennel club he knew his place and did really well. He did not mark, allowed the trainer to hug him and touch him, did the gum test, and behaved well. He initially jumps up when meeting someone which needs to be curbed and he really wants to be around people but when he was put in a room for hours at a time, he was not destructive. He laid on his bed until I came to let him out. He did not chew on anything or mark. I easily bonded with Francis and so did my husband and daughters.”

Irish Setter/German Shepherd Dog Mix: ZEPHYR

She is a gorgeous 4-year old mix of 50% Irish setter, 25% white german shepherd, and 25% mutt according to her DNA report.  Her immunizations are up to date and she’s on monthly does of Comfortis for fleas and heartworm.

Zephyr is a very sweet dog, personality wise.  She is good with cats.  She’s friendly to other people and would be a lousy guard dog.  She’s perfectly house-broken and has learned how to use the dog doors at my house.  She does not dig out.  She gets along very well with other dogs &  is not an “alpha”.  She’s playful and loves to run.  She has been seen pointing birds and rabbits and she may be a candidate for  hunting.  She is an extremely strong dog, needs work on her recall  and will need confident leadership and direction. In return you will have the devoted love of this gorgeous girl!

Cockapoo: RILEY

riley-BC167.25685581-2-x

Riley is a very sweet little dog. He is good with other dogs and likes to play with the dogs he currently lives with. He knows his basic obedience commands. He is fully house trained and crate trained. He is food motivated and is very eager to learn new things. Riley is a real snuggle bug and bonds very quickly to his family.

riley-BC167.25685581-1-x

Riley does have some issues that his current owners have not been able to curb. He is fearful of people coming into his space and he has snapped and will try to bite if he is pushed too far. He also shows signs of resource guarding. Riley is still so young if he starts training and socializing with a positive reinforcement trainer he can become a really great dog!

His new home needs to be dog knowledgeable and consistent and dedicated to his training. Riley really needs help to become the best dog he can be.

Labrador Retriever X: BOOMER

On Hold for Adoption !

Meet handsome and fun-loving Boomer!!!

Boomer is handsome and sweet yellow lab cross.  Boomer is younger pup – approximately 2 years old and is a smaller dog – weighing about 40 pounds which is a very manageable size.  He has the beautiful personality of a lab, loving, affectinate, clever and forever wanting attention and playtime.  He is fully house-trained and well socialized among children and adults alike.  Boomer is up to date on his vaccinations and neutered.

Boomer was adopted by his former companion from the Pound.  He quickly found his place and became inseparable with his companion.  He has had experience with other dogs and cats and seems to get along well with everyone.  He enjoys the company of children and is always up for a game of catch, walking both on and off leash.  For a young dog, he is well-behaved, and has learned some basic commands under his collar.

Boomer would be a great addition to an active family with children that were looking for a dog to become the family playful pet – taking him on hikes, family vacations, swimming, and one that settles nicely with a good chew toy or a bone.  Boomer would also prefer a family that had a stay at home parent or someone who works from home, or short hours as Boomer is not used to being alone.

Alternatively, he would also be a great companion for a retiree who is able to spend time with the dog and walk him regularly. Boomer has been left him at home and in the car for short periods without incidents.  Of course, Boomer will need time for adjustment and the opportunity to bond with his new family and space before he can be trusted in his home environment on his own.

Although Boomer is a smaller dog, he will still have big dog exercise needs.  A happy dog is a well exercised dog, and Boomer will need at least an hour a day of running/walking/playing fetch and other mentally stimulating activities.  Boomer could also use some basic command training through a trainer or adult dog class.  Brush up on your skills – in order to help this young boy grow into the best gentleman he is capable of being!!

If you are looking for a great family dog that has all the wonderful traits of a lab, and comes with basic training and a yearning for love and affection, Boomer is the guy for you!

Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever X: LUNA

On Hold for Adoption!

lunaBC167.25692088-1-xLuna is a very pretty 6 year old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (possibly cross).  She was severely neglected in her youth (0-3 yrs) but has been actively rehabilitated over the past 3 years. She is still a bit fearful and can be leash reactive to some strangers that approach her quickly, as she cannot “flee”.

Luna-BC167.25692088-2-x

She is good off leash with respectful and friendly dogs. Luna is a very loving and playful girl. Because she is out of her puppy stage she can relax and be calm in the house. She is fully house trained and she will not destroy furniture or toys. She is very smart and knows quite a few tricks and a number of commands. Luna would like to find a calm home where not too many people (strangers) are coming and going. She would love to find a human who is experienced with fearful dogs and who will have the time and patience to continue to train and socialize her.

Vizsla: ODI

On Hold for Adoption!

Odi-BC167.25784456-1-x

Odi is a nine month old neutered Vizsla. He is a friendly, social guy.He is good with dogs, kids, and out on walks he ignores cats, but he doesn’t currently live with one.

Odi is a happy dog that likes to be a part of the family. He will need lots of exercise and mental stimulation to keep him from becoming bored. He is in his teenage stage and can be very excitable! He would excel if he is given a job to do, maybe agility training! He is very agile and is in great physical condition. Odi is highly food motivated, and will be a fun dog to train.

He loves the water, playing with sticks, running, and playing with his chew toys. He is crate trained, and sleeps happily in his crate at night. Odi has good recall and can be trusted off leash. On leash he does pull.

Odi does have some issues and that is why he is in need of a new home. He will resource guard his food, bones, and sometimes his bed. His current owners have done training with him and have seen great results, but because there are children in the home they feel Odi is not the right match for them. He also does not like to be restrained.

Odi has another quirk and that is, he will eat other dog’s poop. Because of this silly habit he can develop a parasite called Giardia. He has just finished treatment for this but it may return if he eats more poop.

We are looking for an active person or couple that will take him through more training, and help him with his behavioural issues. We will not place Odi in a home with children. He needs a calm home where he can relax, and get the one on one attention he deserves.

Boxer/Bulldog/Pit X: SWEET PEA

We are seeking any help in  finding Sweet Pea a good home. Three years ago, someone threw her over a fence – she was about 12 weeks old. She was kept  for as long as possible but unfortnately this home could not accommodate another dog, so Sweet Pea was taken to her caretaker’s parents as  they had acerage. The new caretakers had some health issues and they are now  in the process of downsizing and can not keep her any longer. Sweetpea needs to find a new home asap!

Sweet Pea  is spayed and appears to be a pit bull/boxer/bulldog mix. She has a very sweet personality – she is a listener and a pleaser – just wants direction – the type of dog that prefers to be in bed snuggling with you (and snoring like a human)! She is 46 lbs and 15″ tall at her shoulders and approx 30 inches long. Her teeth appear to be in good condition – they are very white and still look like puppy teeth. When her original caretaker had her, she was good on a leash, and she jogged with her. She was also a good car dog. She was never crate trained. She lives with two other dogs and is good with them. She liked the cat she lived with but doesn’t seem to like all other cats much. She doesn’t seem to have any aggression issues re: food – she has a specific bowl that she eats out of and knows her own bowl. She hasn’t spent much time around children, but has been introduced to a 9 month old and she just licked & loved her. She doesn’t have any health issues that we are aware of; she had all her shots when she was younger and this would be to paid  for if any additional shots that are needed.

Please contact 206.854.0297 for further information.

Dachshund: PEPPER

On Hold for Adoption!

Pepper-Doxie-DSCN0172[1]3

We do not know a whole lot about her personality however we do know she is said to be good with cats, children and other dogs and knows some commands. She is accustomed to going for walks 2-3 times a day  so if you are looking for a walking partner Pepper may be just for you!

German Shorthaired Pointer: JACK a.k.a. ROMEO

On Hold for Adoption !

Don’t let the name fool you. This dog will steal your heart in an instant but as well as love, Jack or Romeo, needs boundaries and leadership. If you can be an alpha leader for this dog and love this breed, Jack is too good to pass up.

Jack has a big heart  and is looking for his forever home.  Jack loves to hike and be outdoors, LOVES boating and his recall is very good even off-leash. We figure he’s 3-5 yrs old, a gorgeous fun-loving boy, house & crate trained, neutered and up to date with his vaccinations. He has been bounced around so can be a little unsure of himself around other dogs at first however loves to play.  It takes him a little time to warm up to humans but once he does he is very attached.

His first foster Mom  socialized Jack with her 2 dogs, a lab and a doberman and thanks to her love and attention, he is thriving in his foster environment! Jack is now living in Vancouver with 2 weimaraners.

We are looking for a home without small animals as this breed is prone to a high prey drive … well they are bred for hunting and Jack is showing a strong prey drive to date. He is cuddly and loves to play. We are not sure how he is around small children so perhaps a home with older children (12+ years). His ideal forever home would be to have someone who has the patience and time to get him acclimated to his new environment, as he has some separation anxiety issues but seems that with a little time he will settle in nicely. His new humans will need to exercise him every day as he needs to run off that excess energy! If you are a runner then you couldn’t ask for a better running partner!  He also needs someone to nicely lay down boundaries, as he has a tendency to be dominant but he’s also a sensitive boy and will respond very well for you!

About Jack’s good looks: He is an absolutely striking dog and appears to come from good lines. He is a large GSP – tall, lean and muscular. He weighs 66 pounds and is beautifully marked.

Weimaraner: HOYA BELLA aka DELLA

Meet Della! This gorgeous girl is 5-6yrs young, is active and will require exercise to not only burn off energy but all to get her back into shape. She is currently overweight & needs work to build up her muscle tone.

She likes her doggie friends and is loving with her humans. She would likely bolt out the door if allowed so some special precautions would be necessary. We don’t know how she is with cats – there is a good probability that she is not cat friendly. Della is also a very good watch dog! She will let you know if someone is coming to the front door or if people are in front of your home.

Interested to know more about Della? email:  DogwoodRescue@shaw.ca

Shih Tzu/Poodle Mix: CHARLIE

German Shepherd: SHERWOOD

On Hold for Adoption !

Sherwood is a 20 month old neutered German shepherd that is looking for a new home.

He is a loving, loyal and very smart dog.  He is social with dogs and loves to play. He has been attending Jonah’s Ark doggie playcare and training center in North Vancouver since he was 6 months old. He’s been socialized by all kinds of dogs in the playcare. He is housetrained and well behaved.  He is trained in basic obedience level and will do anything with a command.

He is not attached to just one person but happily loves and follows anyone who cares for him. He does love food.

He is protective over his current owners and his property but that is a normal behaviour in this breed. It can be managed by some training.

The reason Sherwood is being rehomed is due to family matters. The mother of the family has been relocated for work outside of Canada and the father works full time and their young son needs to be cared for. The father does not have the time to focus on Sherwood.

Sherwood will be an excellent family dog for a family that has the time to take care of him.

Beagle: DAISY

Daisy – Beagle

We do not know much about Daisy however here is a quote from one of the staff at the shelter that she is at:

“I wanted you to see how gorgeous this girl is.  She is about 20-25 pounds – very sweet and very quiet.  She’s wonderful with the two pups who were brought home with her.  She is going to a foster home on Tuesday for foster.  She’s really nice.

German Shorthaired Pointer: FRECKLES

Freckles – German Shorthaired Pointer

Beautiful adult female German Shorthaired Pointer that is spayed and up to day on her vaccinations. She was found at a local playground, where she was a frequent visitor for about 2 weeks. She is a great dog – friendly and loved but has isolation anxiety. She was rehomed with a family in the country but they weren’t able to keep her home. They did not have a sturdy crate and she was able to chew out and go nuts in the house. Now that we know how she reacts better, we are trying to give her some more space. Freckles will need a breed savy human to call her new best friend

English Setter: BOSS

Boss – English Setter

This handsome boy is one of two Purebred English Setters that are looking for their forever homes! Boss is four and a half year old Orange Belton English Setter and have been in foster care for a little while now. He is the sibling of Sage (below) purchased from the same breeder. These boys have some impressive lines: one of their grandsires (T’s Gunrunner) is a 3-time CH and 3-time Runner-Up CH, probably AKC venue. T’s Gunrunner’s sire is one of the country’s top ES as far as trials go, 11-time CH, Runner-Up and Field Trial Hall of Fame, Tekoa Mountain Sunrise.

Boss – English Setter

Unfortunately, due to family issues, Sage (below) and Boss were turned into an animal shelter; but then taken in by English Setter rescue in Idaho. They’ve been back yard dogs, but in spite of that have that sweetly typical friendly setter personality. They are nice sized boys – Sage weighs about 60 pounds and Boss weighs about 55 pounds. They like to spend time in the back yard looking at birds and squirrels and neighbors and joggers on the ditch bank. Or, theyll just lie down on the patio and nap (unless theres a cat in the window). They do OK with cats, but do like to stalk them. They get along with other dogs, but it may take a little while for them to warm up to them. They are crate trained and house trained. They actually seem to like it in their crates as long as youre in the room with them. They just lie down and go to sleep. Or, after a few minutes of sniffing around, or if there are no other distractions (like cats), they will just lay down wherever you are and go back into nap mode.

These boys have a lot of potential and would love to have their own homes. Even though they are over four years old, theyre a little bit of a blank slate and will be very fun for someone to work with.

Courtesy Posting. If you think you’d like more information about Sage and Boss, or might be interested in giving them a forever home, please contact Kelley at k40moore@cableone.net for an application or call 208-869-4065. Sage and Boss are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

English Setter: SAGE

Sage – English Setter

This is the brother to Boss (above) and is the second of two Purebred English Setters that are looking for their forever homes! Sage is four and a half year old Orange Belton English Setter and have been in foster care for a little while now. He is the sibling of Boss (above) purchased from the same breeder. English Setter: CHARLIE

Charlie – English Setter

This lovely boy has been up for adoption for almost two months and is looking for his forever home. Charlie is an English Setter who up to date on his vaccinations and house trained.
He is currently residing with his owner, however his owner works out of town and is home very little, so the dog is in the hands of his wife and children. They have two other dogs, horses and cats.
Charlie, the four year old ES, is tethered most of the time. He has  started on birds and likes the activity, but needs many more hours with someone who is around. Charlie is NOT good with other dogs.

Labrador Retriever: MOLLY

Help Miss Molly find a FOREVER home and a family to love her and help her learn that the world wont abandon her anymore.

Molly is so sweet! She was surrendered to animal control and her previous owners said that she was too big, so they got a puppy and made her live in the backyard, but now she barked all the time so they wanted her gone. She was severely emaciated at only 43 lbs when she came in. She gained 13 lbs while in the shelter, but due to her previous owners withholding food from her – she is very possessive of the food she did get.  We are working on eating manners and trusting that she will continue to receive food and water and not be starved.
She is 4 years old and a typical happy lab. She shows some fear with other dogs but with proper correction, positive training and consistency, she will correct.  Cats are unknown. Her previous owner did state that she lived in a home with children and is good with them, that she knows all of her commands and is house trained.  Molly has not shown any aggression to her current Foster family.  Molly may have an allergy to wheat and will just need to be fed a grain free food. She has not barked once since in foster care. She has had a very rough and inconsistent start to life with little love, care, and affection.  Poor Molly deserves to find a family that wants a loving lab to grow old with them, to nuture her kind personality and provide her with an environment that teaches her trust, patience and safety.
Molly will need to be placed in a breed or dog savvy home with a family that understands the demands of a young dog, specifically a labrador retriever. Molly will require 1-2 hours of daily physical activity – running, jogging, hiking, playing fetch or at the dog park, swimming etc – and mental exercise through the form of training and playing within the home. Molly is very food driven and will be successful with treat training. Molly is a dog that needs to run and burn off extra energy in order to behave well mannered in the home. This rule applies to any dog, but specifically dogs of this young age. A happy dog is a well exercised dog. Any potential adoptees must understand the requirements of a young, active and strong dog.
Molly has some basic manners under her collar but will require diligence and consistency with positive and kind reinforcement in training. Molly will also require slow, controlled introductions to other dogs until she establishes trust in that they are not going to hurt her, and a companion that is willing to put in the time to teach this sweet girl to be a lady. With time, commitment and unconditional love, Molly will be your friend for life.

Labrador Retriever: CLAY

Clay is approx 7 years old neutered black lab.  He was found by a good Samaritan and taken to a shelter where he was rescued.  Clay has been in a couple of foster homes, adopted and returned (didn’t work out with the couple), in boarding at the vet’s office and now with a dog trainer.  Poor Clay doesn’t know what is going on.  He is doing much better now since he is boarded at the dog trainer’s home.

He needs his forever home!!!!  He has excellent house manners, is house trained and not destructive.  He goes in his crate during the day and sleeps in it at night.  He Loves people and just wants to be near you.  He will lay down and watch television with you.  Clay is not a confident dog.  He is shy.

Clay does well with certain types of dogs.  He doesn’t like them jumping on him or in his face.   He would do best with mellow dogs.  He does have bad arthritis in his hips and he is on meds for that.  He is NOT dog Aggressive.  But he can feel threaten by other dogs especially if they are not introduced properly.

The dog trainer where he is being boarded puts him with some of her dogs and they do fine.  Clay follows the female mastiff around the yard.  He has been with basset hounds, little dogs and a pit/chi mix puppy.  There are birds and even a rat in the house in cages and Clay leaves them alone.  He may be ok with cats but not for sure.

Clay is neutered, current on all vaccinations, micro chipped, and has been heartworm and fecal tested (both negative).  He is also on heartworm and flea preventive.  Clay does have arthritis in his back legs so he is on liquid Meloxicam which you get from your vet.  You can also get it in pill form from Walmart cheap but need a prescription from  your vet.
